  • Ohio residents age 16+ generally need a resident fishing license
  • Nonresidents age 16+ need a nonresident Ohio fishing license
  • Children under 16 do not need a fishing license
  • Ohio residents age 66+ qualify for discounted senior licenses
  • Active duty U.S. military stationed in Ohio (not on leave) must purchase a resident license
  • Full-time nonresident students actively enrolled at an Ohio college or university and living in Ohio qualify for a resident license
  • Anyone taking frogs or turtles — a fishing license is required, including on private property

Ohio Nonresident Fishing License

Out-of-state anglers fishing in Ohio waters must purchase a nonresident fishing license. Ohio offers 1-day, 3-day, and annual nonresident license options online through ODNR.

  • Nonresident 1-Day — $27.04
  • Nonresident 3-Day — $52.00
  • Nonresident 1-Year — $76.96
  • 1-Day upgrade to 1-Year — $49.92 additional charge; useful if you decide to extend your visit

Ohio attracts nonresident anglers from surrounding states for Lake Erie fishing, inland lakes, steelhead fishing, and river fishing opportunities throughout the state.

Lake Erie Fishing License Ohio

A standard Ohio fishing license covers recreational fishing on Lake Erie. Most anglers fishing for walleye, yellow perch, bass, and other freshwater species do not need a separate Lake Erie-specific license.

However, anglers should always review current ODNR Lake Erie regulations because size limits, daily limits, and seasonal rules may apply to certain species and areas. Charter fishing operators and fishing guides on Lake Erie require separate commercial licensing from ODNR.

Ohio Fishing License Expiration

Ohio annual fishing licenses are valid for 365 days from the purchase date. Multiyear licenses remain valid until the expiration date listed on the license. Short-term licenses (1-day and 3-day) are valid from the time of purchase through midnight on the day of expiration.
